The Tengkera Mosque is a mosque located in Tengkera in the Melaka Tengah district of
Melaka, Malaysia. It was built in 1728 and is a historic mosque built during the Dutch rule.
The mosque is also the second oldest mosque in Malaysia after the Kampung Hulu Mosque
The uniqueness of the design of the Mosque at that time proved that Islam had been
established in Melaka for the past 600 years. Originally, this mosque was made of wood with
its roof from the leaves of nipah and its poles from diamonds or ulin imported from
Kalimantan, Indonesia. The mosque was refurbished twice in 1890 and 1910.
Inside this mosque there is the grave of Sultan Hussein Muazzam Shah from Johor who has
recognized the early agreement of Singapore’s handing over to Sir Stamford Raffles with
Temenggung Abdul Rahman on 6 February 1819.
After his Singapore assignment, he left Singapore and moved to Malacca. Sultan Hussein
Muazzam Shah died on September 5, 1835 and was buried in the mosque grounds
